The English Football League today revealed key details for the start of the 2020/21 season, and Sheffield Wednesday’s Garry Monk will have pencilled plenty of dates into his diary as things get moving.

Defender set for Owls return

August 14

Preseason starts for the Owls as Monk welcomes his side back to Middlewood Road in what’s going to be a staggered return involving a number of fitness tests etc. for the players.

James Beattie and the rest of Monk’s new technical team are expected to be part of it, as well as Fisayo Dele-Bashiru.

The draw will be made for the first round of this year’s Carabao Cup, which will be of interest to the Owls because whoever they draw will become their first competitive opponent of the 2020/21 season. As a sidenote, they’ve scrapped the two-legged semifinal this year.

August 21

It’s been confirmed that at 9am on this day, the EFL will release all of the fixtures for the 2020/21 league season – Championship, League One and League Two. There will be 13 midweek matches this season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and there’s still no confirmation of when fans will be allowed to return.

August 24

The Owls will head out to Loughborough University for a five-day training camp as Monk continues to put them through their paces. Hopefully there will be a few more new faces through the door by then.

September 5

The first round of Carabao Cup games will get underway following the draw – at a to be confirmed time – on August 18. The EFL also pointed out that ‘alternative dates may apply’.

September 12

Wednesday, and other teams across the EFL, will take part in their first league game of the season, though will once again be behind closed doors due to the fact that no decision has been made on the return to stadiums for supporters. The final round of fixtures are penned in for May 8/9.

October 5

As per the EFL’s latest statement on the matter, ‘the window for international registrations closes at 11pm’, however there’s ‘an agreement in place with the Premier League for an extended two-week domestic only window which will close at 5pm on Friday 16’.
