The 35-year-old, who has found himself out of favour since making his last appearance for the club back in November, will be reunited with goalkeeping coach Nicky Weaver while training with the club’s youngsters.

He has not trained at all since football’s return from the coronavirus suspension in June.

Last week he was linked with interest from Blackburn Rovers, although The Star understands no firm approach has been made to the club from the Lancashire side. His current deal run out in the summer of 2021.

Together with the now-departed pair Sam Hutchinson and David Bates, Westwood trained with the under-23s for a portion of last season.

The Owls’ first team have travelled to Loughborough University for a week-long training camp that will culminate with a friendly against Premier League Leicester City on Saturday.

Asked about Westwood’s future last monk, Owls boss Garry Monk said: “There’s been nothing on the players that are contracted to the club at all from anywhere.

“I haven’t been focused on that as you can imagine for any of the contracted players, there’s been no information or anything said to me about that side of it.

“It’s an ongoing thing, we’ll see in the coming weeks what the potential situations might be for all the situations for what we might face.”

Both Westwood and Monk have continuously denied rumours of a bust-up, with the Wednesday manager maintaining the situation is down to the natural progression he wants to make to the side.

Earlier this year 25-year-old Cameron Dawson took Westwood’s place in goal and was given a four-year contract extension to stay at Wednesday. Joe Wildsmith has recovered from injury to take the gloves from Dawson as the season was finished off this summer.

Westwood, a 21-cap Republic of Ireland international, last made the bench for the Owls in December.
