The Newcastle United winger spent last season on loan at Sheffield Wednesday and the Owls are keen to re-sign the 25-year-old, who had also been linked with Rangers and Middlesbrough, on another loan.

United, however, may be unwilling to farm Murphy out this season given that he’s in the final year of his contract, and Bruce has been assessing Murphy at the club’s pre-season training camp in York.

“Jacob has trained with us,” said head coach Bruce. “He’s probably thinking he’s not had a fair crack of the whip, and certainly I haven’t seen a great deal of him. It’ll be interesting to see how he does for us.

"Certainly, he had a really good spell at Sheffield Wednesday last year. They think the world of him. He did very, very well, and they would like him back.

"I’m just going to take my time with him and have a look and see what the next step is for him, because he has had a successful loan in the Championship last year.

"He looks as if he’s developed physically a little bit over the last 12 months or so. We’ll see what he does over the next two or three weeks in particular.”

Murphy, a boyhood Newcastle fan, arrived from Norwich City in the summer of 2017 in a £12million deal. He had a loan spell at West Bromwich Albion the season before last.
