“I think he might surprise a few people…” – Tony Pulis gets the full backing of former Sheffield Wednesday and Stoke City star

Lewis Buxton played 24 games under Pulis in the Championship, FA Cup and EFL Cup in the 2000s, and he thinks that Wednesday could well have a good appointment on their hands if he’s given the back to do things his way.

Buxton knows all about the goings on at Hillsborough having made over 200 appearances for the Owls in his career, and thinks that his old Stoke boss could surprise a few people now that he’s been given the job in South Yorkshire.

Speaking to Look North, the former Owls man said, “People have got things to say in terms of the football not being entertaining, that there’s not enough goals. That’s the criticism, but I think Tony has not really had a crack at a team which has had the players to play another way and be really effective.

“I think if he had been given that opportunity in his career then you might have seen something different. I think he might surprise a few people if he gets the backing and enough time there to do things his way.”

Pulis’ first game in charge is up against Preston North End on November 21st, and he’ll be desperate to get off to a winning start to his life as Garry Monk’s successor at Hillsborough after more than a year out of the game.
