Harry Gray latest and one other Sheffield Wednesday injury concern after Wolves defeat

Sheffield Wednesday exited the Carabao Cup in defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Tuesday evening.

Sheffield Wednesday may have more to be concerned about than a so-so Carabao Cup exit after two injuries were reported from their defeat to Wolves on Tuesday evening.

Leeds United-owned loanee forward Harry Gray was the central concern after he was substituted in a hurry thanks to concussion protocol with five minutes to go in the clash, which the Championship side won out 2-0. The 17-year-old looked to be holding his head in some discomfort and officials wasted no time in ushering the Wednesday medics onto the field to offer treatment before he went straight down the tunnel.

“He’s OK, but we don’t know if the nose is broken,” Owls boss Henrik Pedersen said before making clear he knew of no immediate concern over a concussion. “That’s why he went off.” Asked whether he felt there was a concern over his availability for the weekend, Pedersen replied that he did not yet know.

Elsewhere, the Wednesday boss also reported a concern over defender Sil Swinkels, who was the one unplanned substitution in the clash having been replaced by Max Lowe on 70 minutes. The former Aston Villa defender seemed to be moving gingerly as he came off the field and his coach expressed a grimace when explaining he had been forced to go off. Asked the likely severity of his issue, the Dane said: “I don't know. He just said he felt it was very tight. I don't know yet.”

Other than those concerns, Wednesday reported a clean bill of health other than some tiredness as they shuffled their pack to offer minutes to players that may not have otherwise had them this season.

Pedersen continued: “Reece James, I think it was great for him to get 90 minutes, we had Ricardo (Santos), he's not played that much in many months and he has now played 65 minutes football without injury problems. He was very tired in the end, but it was very good to see that.

“We have Jarvis (Thornton) who gets some minutes against a good opponent again, we had Kieran (Morrison), who played a good game today, he was really tired also in the end. We had Will (Grainger), who got experience against a good opponent, we had Harry again, who was really strong, so a lot of good minutes to a lot of players.”
