The Owls have been linked with some of the finest players in English football – we’re looking at you, Mr Cantona – it’s tough not to wonder what could have been.
So who slipped through their fingers and who moved on too soon? Let’s look at 15 stars who could’ve made a difference.
5. Eric Cantona
You know the story. Trevor Francis denies it, but those images of him holding a Wednesday shirt? Looked like preparations for an unveiling to many.. Photo: Getty Images
6. Darko Kovacevic
Written off as an ill-advised flop after just a few month at Wednesday, the Yugoslavia international moved on to Real Sociedad where he would prove himself as one of Europe's top target men. A big-money move to Italian giants Juventus followed, a move that saw the Owls cash a few sheckles in add-on cash along the way. Photo: Grazia Neri
7. Leroy Lita
A 2013 loanee from Swansea, Lita made a valuable contribution to Wednesday but no deal was permanent. He was loaned out to Brighton and eventually signed on a permanent basis for Barnsley. He now plays in the non-league. Photo: Clive Rose
8. Michail Antonio
Michail Antonio was a fan favourite at Hillsborough and had immense quality, offering pace and directness from the wing. Signed initially on loan and then permanently, he left for Nottingham Forest after two seasons. Now playing in the Premier League at West Ham, in days gone by he could have become an Owls legend.
