The Owls have been linked with some of the finest players in English football – we’re looking at you, Mr Cantona – it’s tough not to wonder what could have been.
So who slipped through their fingers and who moved on too soon? Let’s look at 15 stars who could’ve made a difference.
13. George Hirst
A controversial one. Hirst, son of Owls legend David, is an England youth international and was touted as the next big thing at Hillsborough. An ethically-dubious switch to Leicester via Belgian side OH Leuvenhas yet to see him make his senior bow. He's 21 now and could well have been a key man at Wednesday. Photo: Octavio Passos
14. Sean Clare
The most recent Owls departure on this list, Clare arrived from the Nike Academy and impressed in fits and starts in the club's academy ranks before making a handful of appearances in the first team. Left to join Hearts in 2018 and is enjoying life in Scotland. Time will tell. Photo: Ian MacNicol
15. Alex Lopez
Another short and sweet loan move saw Alex Lopez play an important role in the 2015/16 play-off season before he moved back to Spain, loaned out once again to Valladolid. After spending last season in Australia with Brisbane Roar he now plays at Racing Ferrol. Photo: Jono Searle
