Former Everton midfielder on trial at Sheffield Wednesday, had two loans at Stockport County

The Owls have a new trialist training with them

Sheffield Wednesday are taking a look at former Everton youngster Tyler Onyango.

The 23-year-old came on at half-time in the 4-0 pre-season defeat to Oldham Athletic on Saturday, replacing Billy Mitchell. The 6ft 5in versatile central midfielder, who can also play centre-back, is a free agent after being released by The Toffees at the end of last season.

Owls boss Henrik Pedersen told The Star: “He can play right centre-back in the back three. He can play as a number six. He can play more positions. He's training right now with us, and then let's see what's happening.”

Luton-born Onyango had been at Everton for six years and has had loans at Burton Albion, Forest Green Rovers and Stockport County. He actually made his Everton first-team debut against The Owls in the FA Cup in January 2021. He made five first-team appearances in total, including four in the Premier League. While at Everton, Onyango won the Keith Tamlin Award, an academy accolade which recognises excellence, with Ross Barkley among the past winners.

Owls sporting director, Simon Wilson, was at Stockport when they signed him on loan twice, after his first stint was cut short by injury. Wilson said at the time: "We know he is a versatile player and we believe he can positively contribute to the team in several ways. The last time around it was cut short through injury, but I think we all saw the potential. We are looking forward to working with him again."

The former England under-17 international has made 36 League One appearances, so has experience of the division should he impress and earn himself a deal. Central midfield is an area Wednesday need to add to, with only Barry Bannan, Mitchell and Jarvis Thornton, although Sean Fusire and Liam Palmer can play there. New signing Callum Slattery has so far played further forward in the 10. With Wednesday working under budget restrictions, one or two players who can operate in a number of positions would be useful, and that is a criteria that Onyango fits.
