Marriott endured an unhappy spell at Hillsborough, leaving the club without a goal to his name following a very stop start time that was hindered by injuries and absences throughout the course of the season.

It was revealed originally that Marriott would be heading back to Derby once the 2021/22 campaign came to an end, but now there has been doubt shed on his future with Wayne Rooney’s side after they explained that the English Football League hadn’t sanctioned their extension.

The club said in a statement confirming their retained list today, “In the case of Jack Marriott, the club previously communicated that the player’s contract had been extended until the summer of 2022. The registration approval was subsequently withdrawn by the EFL in December and the club has been in discussion with the player’s representatives and the EFL since January.”

It now remains to be seen whether the former Owl will be on the lookout for a new club this summer or not.

Meanwhile, it was also confirmed that – as previously reported by The Star – that, despite reports elsewhere that Wednesday could land him as a free agent, Lee Gregory’s contract is not expiring at the end of the month.

Gregory, 32, is a target for a handful of Championship clubs, and is likely to require a transfer fee if he’s going to be snapped up from the Rams.
