'On my way' - David Storch sends message to Sheffield Wednesday fans as takeover deal nears completion
The Owls are close to being taken over by Arise Capital Partners
A takeover deal for Sheffield Wednesday is edging closer, with David Storch on his way to the city ahead of becoming the owner.
Mr Storch, his son Michael, and business partner Tom Costin, of Arise Capital Partners, have been working towards a self-imposed deadline of May 1 and they are on track to meet it.
Excitement is building among the fans and Saturday’s final game of the season at home to West Brom is a sell-out despite Wednesday having only won one game out of 45 in the league and having not tasted a home victory in the league in more than a year.
Another hint of the takeover moving closer was the closure of the Megastore on Wednesday for a ‘stocktake’, which was announced with the popular old club badge on an item of clothing, was met by intrigue by fans. And on Thursday morning the shop reopened without the 2025/26 Macron replica kit items on the shelves and with mannequins removed or redressed.
The theme for Saturday’s match is ‘Honolulu Wednesday’ with Hillsborough set to be full of supporters in Hawaiian shirts and fancy dress in what could be a party atmosphere on a day of celebration and the start of a new era. The club has encouraged fans to arrive early for what ‘promises to be a memorable day .’
The story has even reached the Mayor of Honolulu, Rick Blangiardi, who said in a message to The Star: “ I want to send my best wishes to all the Sheffield Wednesday fans ahead of your end-of-season celebration at Hillsborough this weekend. Though I don’t follow English soccer quite as closely as I follow American football, I was very happy to hear that the Sheffield Wednesday faithful have rallied together behind their club this year during a period of real adversity. I know exactly what kind of impact that sport can have on a community, and I applaud your commitment and resolve!”
And it appears Mr Storch has been made aware of the message, with his latest post reading: “On my way up to Sheffield ... the only place I'd rather be than Honolulu. @MayorRickHNL we should do it together sometime #WAWAW#honoluluwednesday#swfc.”
