Exclusive:Lawyers make move on Hillsborough as Sheffield Wednesday takeover draws close

Work is ongoing to move Sheffield Wednesday into new hands is continuing behind the scenes.

The takeover of Sheffield Wednesday by US consortium Arise is closer than ever before, The Star understands, as work continues to take place behind the scenes to complete their acquisition on Friday.

Several small and larger tasks remain but the confidence of insiders is high that matters will be signed and sealed ahead of the final match of the campaign at Hillsborough on Saturday - and on the self-imposed deadline put in place by Arise to avoid further delays.

One positive indication arrived yesterday as an alteration on the official Land Registry indicated moves had been made to ‘protect the pending purchase’ of Hillsborough stadium as solicitors Charles Russell Speechlys LLP - a law firm enlisted by Arise - launched an official priority search on the property on behalf of a company called Hillsborough 1899 Limited.

The Star is told this is standard procedure to prepare for the purchase of a major piece of property and that ‘the lawyers have taken a formal step at the Land Registry to protect their client's interest while the purchase completes.’ Hillsborough 1899 Ltd was a company set up and reflected on Companies House on March 23 and has three directors; David Peter Storch, Michael Eisner Stoch and Thomas Andrew Costin.

Further discussions with authorities both football and local have continued throughout the last days after feverish preparations were undertaken across a couple of visits in the last few weeks. The scale of the rebuild required to take Wednesday forward is monumental and though the road ahead is difficult, efforts appear to have been made to ensure the best possible start.

Bid leader David Storch flew to the UK earlier this week and has spent his time in London as preparations continued. The Star understands he will make the trip to Sheffield today (Thursday) ahead of the planned completion of the takeover on Friday - and an unveiling at the sold-out West Brom match this weekend.

As things stand, confidence would appear to be high that the Owls are in new hands come the weekend. One source with knowledge of proceedings described the completion of the process to The Star as ‘very close’. The process continues behind the scenes.
