Chey Dunkley is set for Sheffield Wednesday’s U23s, but they won’t ‘force him back’

He’s the only new senior signing who is yet to make his Sheffield Wednesday debut, but the Owls will not be rushing Chey Dunkley back into action before he’s ready.

Wednesday boss, Garry Monk, has said recently that the defender is making good progress as he completes his rehabilitation programme, and suggested that he’ll need time in the U23s before being able to get amongst things in competitive games with the first team.

Lee Bullen has played his part in Osaze Urhoghide’s progression from injury of late, with the young defender playing a couple of games for the Owls’ U23s, and it is expected that Dunkley will follow in his footsteps – but only when he’s been given the greenlight to do so from the medical team.

Speaking to The Star today, Bullen explained, “Obviously the gaffer understands that Chey’s going to need some game time, but what we don’t do is force him back. After the injury that he’s had, you don’t want to try and force him back too early.

“We’ll be led by the first team medical staff on that, and try and get him back as and when they feel he’s ready to go. It’ll probably be similar to what happened with Osaze – he’ll probably follow a similar programme.”

After losing 2-1 in a bit of a smash and grab defeat to Birmingham City on Monday, the U23s’ next challenge is against Cardiff City on October 20th, which could potentially be Dunkley’s first game back.
