What Adam Reach said to Sheffield Wednesday boss, Garry Monk, about his playing position for the Owls

Reach had been utilised up front on numerous occasions so far this season as Garry Monk looked for him to play his part in an unfamiliar position, but he was back as a left wingback on Saturday afternoon and put in a tidy performance.

The 27-year-old created the Owls’ opener and was very close to scoring their second as he got on the end of a Kadeem Harris cross, catching his volley sweetly only to see Seny Dieng make a smart save to keep QPR in it.

Speaking to the media after the game, Reach discussed his time playing as a striker for Wednesday, and admitted that, while the situation was largely circumstantial, he did speak to his manager about getting back out wide.

"I think it was forced, really, because of the circumstances,” he said. “We let a lot of strikers go in preseason, so the manager kind of asked me to fill in and help the squad out in that department.

"It took a while, but he's brought in the players that he wants, and to be honest, I was delighted to go back to wing-back. In this formation I think it's my best position. I think I've got a lot of capabilities there.

"That's what I want to do, get wide and get crosses in the box and try to score goals or set up goals.”

He was given that chance at Hillsborough on Saturday afternoon, and the former Middlesbrough man did give a bit of insight into what was said in his conversation with Monk.

He said, "I asked him for the chance to play wing-back. I wasn't getting a game up front ,which is understandable because it's not my position, and it's not where I want to play.

"I asked him for the opportunity to play ,and it's come today. I’ve done some good stuff, and there's still some things I want to improve on, but hopefully I've done enough to put a seed of thought in his mind about where he wants to go with that position, so I’m happy that he gave me the opportunity.

"I’ve player wingback many a times, and I'm a wide player, I want to play wide… In the formation we play we don't have wingers, so wing-back is the closest I'm going to get to that.

"I've made that aware to him that I want to play there, I've had to be patient and bide my time and help out up front in the cup games and hopefully I've done enough to put food for thought in his mind for the next games coming up.”

The Owls do have a bit of time between games now as they look to get back to winning ways after the international break, with Birmingham City their next opponents in the Championship on October 17th.
