Sheffield United Women set for Man Utd test but real focus is on weekend

Sheffield United Women take on Manchester United in the Subway Women’s League Cup on Wednesday night

Sheffield United Women travel to take on the might of Manchester United on Wednesday night but they are making no bones about what the most important fixture is in the coming days.

The Blades are yet to pick up a point in WSL2 this season and are coming off the back of a 4-1 defeat to Newcastle United at the weekend as they head to the Progress With Unity Stadium in Leigh.

As a result, the group stages of the Subway Women's League Cup are playing second fiddle to a clash on Sunday with fellow strugglers Durham Women, who are the only other team still to register a point after three games so far this season.

United were somewhat unfortunate against Newcastle on Sunday, twice being struck down by quickfire goals in either half, and they did have plenty of chances of their own.

The mantra around the team has been that things will come good when, what is a young team, gels having brought in quite a number of new faces in the summer.

But they are going to have to start putting points on the board soon and that’s why little emphasis will be on taking on one of the strongest teams in the country in the cup on Wednesday.

"The ultimate focus is the Durham game,” admitted manager Stephen Healy. “We'll utilise the squad this week accordingly, and there will be opportunities and minutes for players on Wednesday against Manchester United, and it's making sure that we utilise that and keep implementing some of the stuff we are going after in and out of possession, and use that going into Durham."
