Sheffield United team news: Update on Ryan One and Matt Doherty as red card causes full-back issue
Chris Wilder gives injury update ahead of Championship clash against Bristol City
Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder has given an update on Ryan One and, crucially, Matt Doherty and Jamie Shackleton ahead of their trip to Bristol City on Saturday.
The Blades are left without a recognised right-back after Hamza Choudhury was controversially sent off for picking up two yellow cards in the midweek defeat to Portsmouth.
That led to fans wondering about the absence of Matt Doherty from the squad on Wednesday despite the former Wolves man being named as an unused substitute against Lincoln City on Saturday.
“[Doherty] just had a little bit of a flare-up with his knee over the last couple of weeks, so he's got an injection, so he's unavailable for the weekend,” Wilder said.
Wilder confirmed the 34-year-old full-back will face a period of 2-3 weeks on the sidelines.
The Blades boss also shared that Jamie Shackleton, another player who could fill in at right-back, won’t feature after he too missed out on Wednesday night and was another unused substitute last weekend at Bramall Lane.
Wilder added: “Jamie had another setback, so that's been a really disappointing period for him personally, as well as us, so we just monitor him as well, and he's getting back up to speed.”
Everyone else is available for the match against Bristol City at Ashton Gate on Saturday.
Striker One came off the bench during the win over the Imps, but wasn’t named in the matchday squad to face Portsmouth on Wednesday.
The 20-year-old played six minutes last weekend against Lincoln to mark his return, after he suffered a hamstring injury against Birmingham City back in August.
One was in attendance at Fratton Park as the Blades suffered defeat in the dying moments after an Ebou Adams late winner.
United’s gaffer said, “He's training today [Thursday], and he'll be involved at the weekend, simple as that.”
“We had to put some work into him in the international break,” he added.
“It was important that we made him available for the game against Lincoln City. And I think you saw the impact he made coming off the bench and always a medical decision from the experts.
“Of course, I would have loved him to be involved [at Portsmouth], but we made a sensible decision, and he'll be involved on Saturday.”
