Why Chris Wilder plans to hang up a Charlton Athletic shirt in Sheffield United's dressing room

Chris Wilder wanted to focus on the positives after his side’s 1-0 defeat to Charlton Athletic at The Valley.

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder has revealed he plans to hang a Charlton Athletic shirt up in the dressing room to symbolise the good things his side did in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at The Valley.

United looked a good bet to extend their winning run in the Championship to three games in the capital after making a strong start led to a host of chances being created, one of which saw Djibril Soumaré hit the woodwork.

However, United failed to take any of the chances that came their way, and their task was made that little bit harder when Soumaré was shown a straight red card after 35 minutes for a nasty challenge on Charlton attacker Harvey Knibbs.

Astonishingly, United were then reduced to nine men just before the break after captain Japhet Tanganga was shown a straight red card himself for catching eventual match-winner Sonny Carey with his forearm. Blades chief Wilder confirmed after the game the club intends to appeal that particular decision.

With the red cards having had a direct impact on the outcome of the game, Wilder refused to go in too hard on his players, crediting them for the way they had performed prior to losing Soumaré and Tanganga. United dominated the first half, registering ten shots to the Addicks’ none.

Following United’s recent defeats to West Bromwich Albion (2-0) and Wrexham (5-3), Wilder informed his players he would display shirts of the aforementioned clubs in the dressing room to remind them of the mistakes they made in those particular fixtures. He now intends to hang up a Charlton shirt alongside them to remind his players of the positives they showed at The Valley.

“We have won things, we have achieved things, we have had some down days, and we have had some brilliant days, and it’s mad, really, because I think this one will last for a long time, and we have to use it,” Wilder told BBC Radio Sheffield.

“I have said to the boys that I’m going to put a Charlton Athletic shirt in the changing room, but it is going to be a positive Charlton Athletic shirt for what we can do together, how we fought for each other, how we fought for the team, for the badge, for the club, for everyone connected.

“That will go up alongside Wrexham and alongside West Brom. It will be a reminder that if we do get it right, and we’re maybe a little bit more clinical... as I said, we’re not a reckless side, we’re not an undisciplined side.

“If we get everything right out of possession which we did in the first half, we get exciting football, and we are playing positive, exciting football, creating chances. Finishing teams off is obviously a big thing, but we can get something out of this season. I am absolutely certain of that.

“We can get something out of it with 3,500 away or 27,000-30,000 at home giving us that energy. You can see what that energy did to the players.”
