Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder issues Jaïro Riedewald injury update after Charlton absence

Sheffield United were without midfielder Jaïro Riedewald for Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Charlton Athletic.

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder has confirmed midfielder Jaïro Riedewald has been forced to have a scan to discover the extent of his hamstring injury after he missed Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Charlton Athletic at The Valley.

The Dutchman, who joined the Blades on a free transfer back in October, was a notable absentee from the matchday squad in the capital after starting each of the Blades’ five previous Championship matches.

The former Crystal Palace man, 29, has been a roaring success since arriving at Bramall Lane, offering United a sense of bite and aggression in the engine room alongside his ability to keep things ticking nice and smoothly.

His absence saw Oliver Arblaster keep his place in the centre of midfield alongside Djibril Soumaré, who was the first of two United players sent-off in the first half at The Valley. Japhet Tanganga was dismissed just over ten minutes later.

Wilder issues Riedewald update

Offering an update on Riedewald, Wilder told BBC Radio Sheffield: “He has gone for a scan. It was the last action of a small-sided game [in training on Friday]. The last action, right in front of me.

“He has gone to back-heel a ball to keep it in play. He was really bright yesterday before we set off, but he felt his hamstring and felt it tightening up. He’s gone for a scan and over the weekend we will know the extent of that in time.”

Since joining United during the October international break, Riedewald, who had been without a club since leaving Royal Antwerp at the end of last season, has made 15 appearances for the Blades in all competitions, scoring one goal.

Having established himself as an important member of Wilder’s plans, the United chief will be hoping his injury is not going to leave him facing a few weeks on the sidelines. Wilder will almost certainly issue an update on the midfielder when he previews Wednesday night’s clash to Southampton in midweek.
