Sheffield United depth chart as Chris Wilder targets more signings
Sheffield United remain on the hunt for new signings as the countdown to the start of the new Championship campaign continues.
Just over four weeks into the summer transfer window, it is fair to say Sheffield United have been slow out of the traps.
Following last season’s disappointing 13th-placed finish, United supporters were hopeful the Blades would come flying out of the blocks this summer, with the club finding the resources manager Chris Wilder needs to spark a promotion push.
However, Jaïro Riedewald, who was originally released by the club, and Romelle Donovan complete United’s list of incomings at this stage. The former has returned to Bramall Lane on a one-year deal, while the latter has arrived on loan from Brentford for the duration of the 2026/27 campaign.
Although Wilder wanted to trim his bloated squad this summer, the slow nature of United’s start to the window has generated some frustration among supporters, who are desperate to see more new faces arrive at Bramall Lane before the new Championship season gets underway in exactly a month’s time.
The Blades are two friendlies into their pre-season campaign, having beaten FC Halifax Town 3-1 and drawn 0-0 with Chesterfield respectively. They will take to the field for a third time this summer when they take on Levante UD in Spain on Friday.
Their trips to Halifax and Chesterfield saw Wilder mix up his squad, rotating between regular first-team players and academy hopefuls. It is expected to be a similar story against Levante.
Pre-season is, of course, all about fitness and experimentation, but Wilder will hope to have a lot more business done by the time United play VfL Bochum in their final friendly on August 1. United head to Mansfield Town in the first round of the Carabao Cup the following weekend for their first competitive outing of the new season.
United are still light in a handful of areas, not least at centre-back. There is also a need for a right-back and to strengthen their options on the left flank.
A handful of exits have been overseen so far this summer, with the latest seeing youngster Mihail Polendakov head out on loan, and more are expected as the window unfolds.
But with exactly a month to go until United’s Championship opener against Birmingham City at Bramall Lane, here is an overview of how United’s first-team squad is currently shaping up:
Goalkeepers: Michael Cooper, Adam Davies & Ivo Grbić.
Defenders: Femi Seriki, Japhet Tanganga, Mark McGuinness, Nils Zätterström, Harrison Burrows, Sam McCallum & Rhys Norrington-Davies.
Midfielders: Ollie Arblaster, Sydie Peck, Jaïro Riedewald, Joe Rothwell, Jamie Shackleton, Gustavo Hamer & Callum O’Hare.
Attackers: Romelle Donovan, Tahith Chong, Tom Cannon, Tyrese Campbell, Patrick Bamford & Ryan Oné.
