The Blades went 2-0 down early on, in a nightmare start as they looked to get back to winning ways after their stuttering form continued a few days earlier away at Coventry City.

But a much-improved second-half showing saw United drag themselves back level, and they could have even won the game had Angus Gunn not made an impressive save to deny Oli McBurnie his second of the game late on.

The Blades could easily have lost it, too, with City awarded a late and controversial penalty after John Egan was penalised for fouling Teemu Pukki, despite replays suggesting he got a touch on the ball first. But Adam Davies, who was at fault for Pukki’s opener, denied the Finn a hat-trick with an excellent penalty save and United had to settle for a point.

“We gave ourselves a mountain to climb at half-time,” Norwood said. “We gave two real poor goals away. We could lose it and should win it with Oli's header. Is it a good save? He seemed very close and said in the dressing room he should have scored.

“Another dull game at Bramall Lane after the last one [a 3-3 draw with Blackpool with four red cards and a missed penalty]. There are positives to take; we never gave up and kept going and they were hanging on trying to see the game out while we were pushing. That's how it felt. Unfortunately we couldn't get the goal at the end.”

Asked about the mood in the dressing room at half-time, Norwood told SUTV: “The words can't be repeated here what was said, and rightly so. We were poor. The two goals summed up the first half, they were really poor goals. The first one, Davo thought he had a bit more time and the second is a punt up the pitch and Pukki does as he does.

“Then second half, we came out played forward and turned them round. We were a bit more aggressive and left a bit on them. And they were shrinking a bit.”
