Exclusive:Sheffield United handed Harry Souttar transfer boost as Leicester City future stance emerges
Sheffield United have not abandoned hopes of bringing Harry Souttar back to Bramall Lane after learning the Australia international would welcome the chance to leave Leicester City this summer
Harry Souttar has told Leicester City he would like to explore a move away this summer, The Star has been told, as Sheffield United refuse to admit defeat in the race for the giant defender’s signature. The 27-year-old’s future was thrown into doubt after the Foxes were relegated to League One last season.
An impressive showing at this summer’s World Cup with Australia only solidified the feeling he would depart this summer. We revealed earlier this week that City had slapped a £10m price tag on the 6ft 6in defender’s head.
Unless things change dramatically at board level that would rule out United but they may be encouraged to discover Souttar’s stance. Sources have suggested that he wants to play higher than League One and that has kept United interested.
Their hopes of a deal would still need significant support from above and also a negotiation with Leicester as they look to raise funds following relegation. But Souttar loved his time on loan at Bramall Lane the season before last and would be interested in a move to Bramall Lane if the chance arose.
United initially approached Leicester with a proposal of a loan-to-buy deal for Souttar but were told that the only option would be to agree a permanent deal. Souttar has also been linked with Wrexham and West Ham this summer but the big price tag is also said to have put them off as well.
News that their side’s hopes of landing Souttar are not officially over will go down well with Unitedites, many of whom have called for Souttar’s return since his time at Bramall Lane was prematurely ended by a bad Achilles’ injury on Boxing Day in 2024.
Sanctioning such a signing would also be an easy way for Steven Rosen and Helmy Eltoukhy, the under-fire owners, to get a lot of supporters back on side amid ongoing question marks about their ownership of United.
