The Blades were very much the underdogs that evening at a raucous Bramall Lane and the game looked to be going according to the script when the top-flight side went ahead, Steve Yates turning into his own goal. But United dragged themselves on level terms thanks to Jagielka’s screamer from about 30 yards about, before Peter Ndlovu scored the winner from about three.
United almost went all the way to the final that year, losing agonisingly to Liverpool after extra time in the semi-finals, and also reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup and the play-off final in a campaign that promised so much but ultimately left them empty-handed. Another product of the United academy who went on to play for them in the Premier League, Tonge is now an individual coach at Huddersfield Town
10. Wayne Allison
A qualified coach and also the holder of a PhD in sports science and coaching, Allison is currently coaching director at the PGMOL, which oversees match referees and officials in this country. Formerly technical director at the LMA, Allison has also worked at the FA since calling time on his playing career
11. Carl Asaba
The striker played for Stoke and Millwall after leaving United but remains local to the Blades and combines his passion for supercars with a business interest. Can also be heard offering his views on the Blades on local radio and the club’s in-house TV channel
12. Ben Doane
A Sheffield-born youngster who progressed through the ranks to make the first team but saw his career tragically ended by a horror challenge by Darren Holloway away at Wimbledon which led him considering legal action. Reports suggest he may have become a tiler after being forced to leave the game
