Sheffield United could face a new West Brom manager this weekend as ex-Leeds man Carlos Corberán discusses ‘unfinished business’

The Hawthorns hotseat has been empty since the club sacked former Blades player and manager Steve Bruce a fortnight ago, with the Spaniard expected to be unveiled ahead of this weekend’s home clash against Paul Heckingbottom’s side.

Corberán left Town in the summer after leading them to the play-off final last season, and was sacked by Greek giants Olympiacos after his 11 games in charge brought just two wins.

United lost one and drew one against Corberán’s Terriers last season and came within a penalty shootout of facing them in the Championship play-off final, losing on spot-kicks to eventual promotion winners Nottingham Forest.

If he is indeed appointed before the weekend’s early kick-off, live on TV, United will be hoping to avoid the cliched ‘new manager bounce’ and ensure his Baggies reign gets off to a poor start as they look to improve their own promotion form, which has seen them pick up just three points from their six games since the international break.

"I think for me it is really important that the club makes the right decision about which coach they want,” Corberán told Sky Sports recently about his next job. “Which style they want, what is the vision of the cub.

"For the coach, his decision is important to decide which is the right place to go. In which players do you feel the connection from the first moment? This is what I want - the feeling that I did not finish my job here in England. It was the aim to put a team in the Premier League from the Championship.”

Corberán served under Marcelo Bielsa as Leeds’ U23s boss before moving to Huddersfield in 2020. "Carlos is a good colleague, I have found that," Bielsa said of his former protégé back in 2018. "He is very talented. I listen more to his opinion than I give mine to him.”
