However, the Blades boss has also predicted that David McGoldrick is destined to improve his goalscoring record in the Premier League this season.

Wilder, who has also expressed an interest in Arsenal’s Folarin Balogun, confirmed negotiations between officials at Bramall Lane and Anfield are continuing nearly a month after United made an approach for Brewster.

Although he insisted the centre-forwards already at his disposal are capable of unlocking top-flight defences - as McGoldrick did during last night’s Carabao Cup tie at Burnley - Wilder acknowledged a vacancy still exists within his squad for another striker; with Lys Mousset still recovering from foot surgery.

“We’ve made enquiries about a few,” Wilder said. “And most of those are on loan. Rhian is one we have talked to Liverpool about. We need to bring another one in, especially with losing Lys. But we need to find that quality from within as well. To bring in another would make us a stronger and more complete group. But it’s difficult to source and we’re not in a situation to do what two or three other clubs have done or what some people might expect us to do.”

“We have to work smart and cute,” Wilder added. “That’s what we have to do to see if we can fill that gap by bringing in another one.”

With the Covid-19 ripping a chunk out of his recruitment budget, Wilder must overcome a series of financial hurdles in order to snare Brewster, who is also understood to interest Newcastle and Aston Villa - where United travel on Monday.

In order to press their case with Jurgen Klopp, United have presented the German with a detailed development plan illustrating how Brewster will fit into their system and, if he eventually returns to the North West, leave South Yorkshire a more improved player.

McGoldrick marked his first start of the campaign by edging a United side containing five debutants in front at Turf Moor before Burnley reached the third round on penalties following Matej Vydra’s second-half equaliser.

und game, McGoldrick netted only twice in the PL last term although, after witnessing his performance against Sean Dyche’s men, Wilder is convinced he is set to prove more of a threat this term.

“It’s good for Didzy to score and that will do his confidence the world of good,” Wilder said. “He’s an important player for us, he links up the play so well, that was a big contribution from him out there and good for him going forward.
