Former Sheffield United striker Luton Shelton passes away aged just 35

Luton Shelton, the former Sheffield United striker, has passed away at the age of just 35, according to reports in his native Jamaica.

Shelton had been battling motor neurone disease for some time, and the Jamaican Gleaner reported that the former United striker died earlier today.

The extent of Shelton’s condition, known commonly as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s Disease, was laid bare in a heartbreaking video interview in 2015, when his wife Bobette admitted: “Basically, our lives revolve around him because he needs everything.”

The striker signed for United from Helsingborgs during their Premier League season in 2007/08, and is fondly remembered for a standout performance against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Former Blades goalkeeper Paddy Kenny was a teammate of Shelton at Bramall Lane, and paid tribute to the man who was Jamaica’s record goalscorer.

"Just heard the sad news that my former teammate Luton Shelton from our days @SheffieldUnited has died,” Kenny tweeted.

“35 years old is way too young for a young man. Life is too short so appreciate every day.”
