Former Premier League striker Kevin Phillips says Sheffield United are in 'a good position' ahead of Wrexham
Kevin Phillips praises Chris Wilder ahead of Wrexham clash
Five-time Championship promotion winner Kevin Phillips has said ‘you can never write off’ Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United ahead of the Wrexham clash on Friday night.
Phillips has opted for a Blades victory and praised manager Chris Wilder, highlighting his experience as a key factor.
The former striker scored the winning goal for Sunderland at the Stadium of Light in United’s first-division play-off second-leg match in 1998, which sent the Black Cats through to the final after winning 3-2 on aggregate.
Ahead of Friday night’s game under the Bramall Lane lights, the 53-year-old has recognised the difficult position that United find themselves in after a frustrating transfer window for fans.
Speaking to Best Betting Sites, he said: “I think Sheff Utd are sitting in a perfect position. They've had some up-and-down results this season, but they're still in and around that play-off position. And that's at the moment with the signings perhaps not coming in that Chris would like. They're in a good position, and this is another chance at home to get some points on the board. So I think he'll be relatively happy where he is.
“And you certainly cannot write them off. He's got the experience; he's one of the most experienced managers in that league in terms of promotions, and he knows the club inside out. So yeah, you certainly cannot write Sheffield United off.”
The fixture sees some familiar faces return to Bramall Lane, notably Callum O’Hare, who left United to join Wrexham on deadline day for a deal worth around £7 million.
O’Hare is yet to score his first goal for the Reds, and Unitedites will be crossing their fingers that it doesn’t come against his former team.
Kieffer Moore will also be visiting his former side after he made the switch in the summer of 2025.
The 28-year-old was part of the team that played in the 2025 Play-Off final at Wembley against Sunderland.
He scored only six goals across 30 appearances for the Blades.
