Sheffield retro: 45 of the best photos showing what 80s life was really like

It was a decade that witnessed huge technological strides, from the Walkman to the World Wide Web.

But the 80s were not all about progress, with the miners’ strike, the Falklands War and the Poll Tax protests defining the political landscape.

Live Aid brought hope, while the launch of EastEnders and Charlene and Scott’s wedding in Neighbours delivered escapism to a society in need of some light relief.

In Sheffield, the Ski Village provided our adrenaline fix, Millhouses Lido was the place to be on a hot summer’s day, and Castle Market thronged with bargain-hunters.

This retro photo gallery captures those and other lost attractions around the city, including popular pubs, shops and clubs of the 80s.

Kylie is pictured thrilling revellers at the legendary Roxy nightclub, Bruce Springsteen is shown putting on an unforgettable show at a packed Bramall Lane Stadium, and a new TV series is being filmed in Hillsborough.

Fletchers bakery, the famous Stone House pub, the old Silver Blades ice rink, and the opening of Crystal Peaks shopping centre also feature in this collection of memorable images from the decade.

The scenes of everyday life also include a fond farewell for a much-loved headteacher, bathers splashing around at Attercliffe Swimming Baths, and a world record-breaking Yorkshire pudding.

Do these photos bring back any memories for you, and what do you think were the best and worst things about life in Sheffield during the 80s?
