It was their biggest gig yet when Oasis played Sheffield Area on April 22, 1995. After the first 12 songs of the set, the band left the stage, except Noel, who stayed with only an acoustic guitar, a microphone, and a stool. After playing b-side ‘Take Me Away’, Noel told the 12,000-strong crowd: “I’m gonna play a brand new one - I only wrote it on Tuesday! No one’s heard this before. I haven’t got a title for it yet either.” Months later the song - which turned out to be Don’t Look Back in Anger. Memorable and iconic photos of when Oasis and the Gallagher brothers performed in Sheffield

This retro gallery looks back on the times that Oasis and the Gallagher brothers have performed in Sheffield over the years

After an incredibly popular (and long overdue) reunion, the Gallagher brothers have announced that they will tour the UK, Ireland and the US, as well as a revisit to Knebworth the site of arguably their greatest live shows.

Oasis finally confirmed new tour dates for 2027, a run of shows taking place 30-years after a historic two nights in 1996.

But it was just a year before that at Sheffield Arena that Oasis’ Noel Gallagher, who stayed on stage after the band left the stage following the first 12 songs of the set, armed only with only an acoustic guitar, a microphone and a stool, gave a live world premiere to a future hit.

After playing b-side ‘Take Me Away’, Noel told the 12,000-strong crowd: “I’m gonna play a brand new one - I only wrote it on Tuesday! No one’s heard this before. I haven’t got a title for it yet either.”

Months later the song - which turned out to be Don’t Look Back in Anger, that was released 30 years ago - would find its way onto Oasis’ second album What’s the Story? (Morning Glory) and was released as a single in early 1996, going straight to number one in the charts and selling just under a million copies at the height of Britpop.

Over the years, Oasis have performed in Sheffield twice since then. Sadly no dates have been announced for Sheffield (yet). But we can hope.

Take a look at this retro gallery, as we look back on those moments when Oasis performed for fans in the city, and when Liam came to the Steel City (to thunderous applause).
