After an incredibly popular (and long overdue) reunion, the Gallagher brothers have announced that they will tour the UK, Ireland and the US, as well as a revisit to Knebworth the site of arguably their greatest live shows.
Oasis finally confirmed new tour dates for 2027, a run of shows taking place 30-years after a historic two nights in 1996.
But it was just a year before that at Sheffield Arena that Oasis’ Noel Gallagher, who stayed on stage after the band left the stage following the first 12 songs of the set, armed only with only an acoustic guitar, a microphone and a stool, gave a live world premiere to a future hit.
After playing b-side ‘Take Me Away’, Noel told the 12,000-strong crowd: “I’m gonna play a brand new one - I only wrote it on Tuesday! No one’s heard this before. I haven’t got a title for it yet either.”
Months later the song - which turned out to be Don’t Look Back in Anger, that was released 30 years ago - would find its way onto Oasis’ second album What’s the Story? (Morning Glory) and was released as a single in early 1996, going straight to number one in the charts and selling just under a million copies at the height of Britpop.
Over the years, Oasis have performed in Sheffield twice since then. Sadly no dates have been announced for Sheffield (yet). But we can hope.
Take a look at this retro gallery, as we look back on those moments when Oasis performed for fans in the city, and when Liam came to the Steel City (to thunderous applause).
Were you there?

It’s genuinely refreshing to see one of the stalwarts of such an incredible era show such care, reflection and introspection in delivering a collection of songs that means so much to so many. | Iconic Media Photo: Christopher Hallam
