There are few greater pleasures than a hearty meal washed down with an ale.

Self-described as Sheffield's Premier Gastro Pub, the Kelham Island institution delights customers with its plates of hearty, but refined food.

Favourites include salted and roasted kohl rabi and guinea fowl supreme.

The Harley

Located on the doorstep of the University of Sheffield , the Harley is renowned by students for its mouth-watering burgers.

The pub goes beyond the standard bacon cheeseburger on offer at every gastro pub, instead serving up unique culinary creations.

These include; Lamb of God - a double lamb patty served with sriracha aioli and Monterrey jack cheese, and The Mac is Back, a mac and cheese patty, served with salsa verde.

Housed in the old Central fire station on Division Street, this airy and modern pub boasts an excellent range of craft beers - the perfect accompaniment for their sumptuous burgers.

For £6.50, diners can tuck into a spicy fired chicken burger topped with katsu curry sauce, or a chargrilled jerk chicken burger topped with a scotch bonnet dip and lime mayo.

The Nottingham House

This Broomhall pub boldly promises to "fill your day with pie and nights with drink".

And it does just that, with it's great tasting ales and pleasing selection of meat and vegetable stuffed pastry - all served with mushy peas and mash.

Rutland Arms

Regarded by many as the best ale house in town the Rutland Arms has seven handpumps constantly rotating and featuring offers from the best breweries in the country.

The beers on offer make the perfect accompaniment to the pub's unpretentious and hearty British grub.

Also in Kelham Island, The Fat Cat is best known for their fresh ale made at the on-site brewery.

However, the pub also dishes up reasonably priced plates of comfort food.

For 5.75 peckish punters can enjoy a steak and ale, or mushroom and mustard pie.

Situated in Commonside this snug venue's real ales and pub fare are a fantastic match.

The Closed Shop is also one of the best spots in town for a plate of vegetarian or vegan food, with halloumi burgers and vegan sausage sarnies both on the menu.

There are few safer bets in Sheffield for a cracking Sunday lunch than the Wick at Both Ends.

And throughout the rest of the week the West Street pub offers a variety of dishes fom cauliflower tacos to beer battered fish and chips.

These can be washed down with a cocktail from their vast drinks menu.

Voted the best student pub in the UK in 2016 for its warm atmosphere and tasty food.

The Doctor's Orders is also home to the Yorkshire Burrito; a Yorkshire pudding stuffed with slow cooked beef, horseradish mash and ale infused gravy.
