Pictures and videos from the scene showed water flowing down the road as motorists attempted to navigate their way through the flooded area.

The flooding continued for several hours, with water still visible on the road at around 9pm.

Children were seen cycling and playing in large puddles while drivers faced delays as emergency repair work got underway.

Witnesses reported the water appeared to flow as far as the Dutch roundabout, creating disruption on one of the city's busiest routes during peak travel times.

Yorkshire Water has now confirmed that the flooding was caused by a burst water main and said crews were quickly dispatched to restore water supplies and begin repairs.

The company said work is continuing to repair the damaged main and reinstate the affected area.

A road closure and signed diversion remain in place while the work is carried out, with Yorkshire Water saying the measures are necessary to protect the public.

A Yorkshire Water spokesperson said: "Yesterday (9 June) we experienced a burst main on Tenter Street, Sheffield. Our team responded quickly to restore supply.

"Our contract partners, M Group, are currently completing the repair and following reinstatement.

"For the safety of our colleagues, pedestrians, and road users, there is a road closure and minor, signed diversion in place.

"We would like to thank the local community for their patience and apologise for any inconvenience this has caused."

The water company has not yet confirmed what caused the main to burst but they have clarified that there was no waste or raw sewage in the water that escaped.

A spokesperson added: “This was a clean water main so not connected to foul or wastewater network.

“We have not had any sewer escape alerts on the network in that area.”
