New name linked to Sheffield Wednesday manager vacancy with range of profiled considered

Sheffield Wednesday are on the hunt for a new head coach.

The process to bring a new head coach to Sheffield Wednesday is ongoing, with candidates moving through interview stages to become Henrik Pedersen’s replacement at Hillsborough.

The Star reported on Friday morning that a number of candidates were being considered following confirmation of Pedersen’s departure over the weekend, with those selected to move into discussions with Owls CEO and ownership figures in the coming days.

Wednesday are also understood to have spoken to the assistants of prospective individuals and are seeking to bring in a management team with an ability to instil a distinct identity on the club’s playing style rather than rush into an appointment set on do-or-die promotion ambitions this season.

Former Stockport County boss Dave Challinor is believed to be among the candidates considered in the process and though the list of potential hires is believed to have been narrowed-down as the club progresses, The Star is working on shoring-up an understanding over a handful of names that would suggest a range of career profiles are in the running. The list would suggest a preference for a front-foot style of football and it is understood that names from the UK and abroad are being weighed-up.

Reports from Scotland have suggested a new name in Jimmy Thelin. The 48-year-old Swede has previous managerial experience with FC Ljungarum, Jönköpings Södra IF and Elfsborg - but is best known in the UK for a stint with Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen between 2024 and 2026 in which he won the Scottish Cup thanks to a penalty shootout win over Celtic.

Other reports suggest Notts County boss Martin Paterson to have been a candidate, though those links could be complicated in that he would require a compensation package. Hull City assistant boss Dean Holden was linked with the role but has since signed a new contract with the Tigers.
