Last-ditch talks failed to resolve the bitter dispute over pay, jobs and conditions, with all sides blaming each other for the lack of progress.
Pictures show a main entrance hall at the Midland Station nearly empty of people, with just a handful of trains appearing on the boards, with picket lines and shows of support outside the station, complete with banners and placards.
