Tragedy as two people are killed in horror crash on M1 near Sheffield

Two people have died in a horror crash on the M1 near Sheffield, it has been confirmed this morning.

Tragedy struck on the northbound M1 near Woodhall – between Junction 30 for Barlborough and Junction 31 for Sheffield – just before 7.30pm yesterday.

The motorway was closed in both directions in the aftermath of the crash, with traffic diverted.

A vehicle involved in the incident left the northbound carriageway.

South Yorkshire Police said: “At 7.29pm last night, police received reports that a vehicle had left the M1 northbound carriageway between J30 and 31 near Woodhall.

"On emergency services’ arrival at the scene, two people were sadly pronounced dead.

“One lane of the M1 remains closed at this time as officers continue their enquiries.”

An air ambulance was deployed to the crash scene and numerous fire appliances, ambulances and police cars were also deployed.

Details of the casualties have not yet been released.
