Sheffield Wednesday: Sam Winnall hit by new setback

Centre-forward Sam Winnall's Sheffield Wednesday comeback from knee surgery has been put on hold by a fresh injury.

The striker was closing in on a return after a cruciate operation last February and was training with the first-team squad.

But he has now suffered a calf problem, manager Jos Luhukay revealed.

"Two weeks ago we had a very positive situation, but then he felt his calf," the Owls boss said. "He has been two weeks not training with the team.

"Every day he has treatment from our medical team and physios but it takes time before he can come back on the field for training with us."

The calf issue is a blow for Winnall, who spent part of last season on loan at Derby County, but there is better news about the joint which saw him go under the knife.

"His knee is good," Luhukay confirmed.

All four of the Wednesday players who were called up by their countries during the international break - Atdhe Nuhiu, Ash Baker, Michael Hector and Josh Onomah - have returned unscathed.

New loan signings Hector and Onomah trained with their new teammates for the first time today.
