Distinctive former pub set to be transformed as plans for once-popular Sheffield estate local approved

Former pub had been closed since

Plans to convert a once popular Sheffield pub into a care home, transforming its appearance, have been approved.

Sheffield Council has granted planning permission for the plans which will see what was one The Forum, on Sandstone Road, Wincobank, remodelled.

Its previous distinctive ‘wedge’ appearance would be changed into something looking more like a conventional house, according to drawings that have accompanied the plans.

Planning company Max Design had drawn up a planning application for Onset Care Ltd, describing the plans to convert it into a care home.

The proposal for the building, which was also at one stage called Wenue6, includes internal alterations to create a six-bedroom care facility, along with a ground floor extension, a new first floor extension, and a replacement roof.

The planning application states: “The proposed development seeks to repurpose the underutilised public house into a specialist six-bedroom care home for adults with learning disabilities or complex needs, requiring supported living.”

Sheffield Council issued a notice confirming they were approving the planning permission on Friday, July 10.

Ward Coun Mark Rusling said: “There is clearly a need for appropriate adult care facilities in Sheffield. However, as ward councillors, Dawn (Dale) and I want to protect the residential character of the Sandstone Road area.”

He asked for a legal clause to ensures that the approved use could not later expand, intensify, or evolve beyond the current plans.

Coun Mick Lee described the facility as a ‘rehabilitation centre’ and raised concerns over antisocial elements he feared it may attract.

The pub was featured in 2023 'Sheffield's Real Heritage Pubs' book, by Campaign for Real Ale’s pub heritage officer, Dave Pickersgill.

He wrote at the time: “Opened in 1967, this estate pub has a novel design which mirrors the steep slope on which the building is built. Of a single range, it rises from a single storey to two storeys under a single roof along its principal façade giving the building a wedge-shaped cross-section.

“The building is of local stone and retains hung tiles to its upper storey. The pub was designed by Melling Ridgeway & Partners Ltd., who worked regularly for Stones, but is not typical of the firm’s style.”
