An air ambulance arrived in Thurcroft shortly after 7.30am, with police confirming that they attended the school due to “reports of a medical episode”.

Now, the The Willows School - a special education place of learning on Locksley Drive in Thurcroft - has said that headteacher Rachael Booth was taken ill on the premises.

The school will remain closed for the rest of this week, and will reopen on Monday, October 19.

A message on the school website from Warren Carratt, chief executive officer of Nexus Multi Academy Trust, said: “Further to yesterday’s communication, we are now in a position to provide more details of the events in school on Wednesday morning that led to the short notice closure of The Willows.

“Our headteacher Rachael Booth is currently in critical care, having had a heart attack in school yesterday morning. As families know, this led to a rapid response from emergency services.

“Whilst Rachael is a much loved headteacher of our school, she is - first and foremost - a beloved daughter, wife and mother and we have sought to ensure that her family have had the privacy and space they need, at this incredibly difficult time.

“Rachael’s condition remains critical, and the next 48 hours are crucial.”

Mr Carratt added: “Given the nature of Rachael’s condition, we are sure you understand that we may need to respond to unexpected news at any stage, so your continued support at this difficult time is really appreciated.

“Many of you will want to extend your support for Rachael and her family. Please direct any messages to school, as it is essential that Rachael and her family continue to have the space and privacy they need.

“You may wish to speak to your young person over the weekend to explain what has happened and the current situation. However, please be reassured that we will ensure teachers and support staff share this news with pupils in a planned and personalised way next week, so that we can minimise any upset they may feel and support them through any difficulties.”
