The High Street branch, inside Heron Foods, was earmarked for closure on July 27, due to ‘diminishing demand’ and the resignation of the operator.

Coun Robert Frost, Barnsley Council member for Wombwell, branded the timing ‘appalling’ and said many customers are elderly or disabled and may struggle to get to another branch.

However, Post Office has now announced the branch will remain open as usual, until a permanent solution could be found.

A Post Office spokesman, said: “We are pleased to announce Wombwell post office will not be closing at the end of this month as originally planned due to the resignation of the operator.

“The resignation will still take effect, however, a temporary postmaster will operate the branch within the current supermarket.”

“Heron Foods is allowing the branch to remain for the time being to give Post Office more time to try to find a permanent solution to maintain services in Wombwell.”
