Ben’s Centre is a charity dedicated to supporting vulnerable people on the streets in Sheffield
A Sheffield charity is bringing together community leaders and supporters to celebrate 30 years of service.
Thursday, September 10marks the anniversary for Ben’s Centre, a place which supports people affected by addiction and rough sleeping in Sheffield.
The event will celebrate everyone who has helped and been involved in the charity, including its staff, volunteers and community of individuals who have supported them over the years.

Sarah Batty, CEO of Ben’s Centre, said: “As Ben's Centre marks its 30th anniversary, we are proud to celebrate three decades of supporting people facing homelessness, substance misuse, and social exclusion.
“While we reflect on our history and the impact we have made, we remain firmly focused on the future, continuing to respond to the evolving challenges facing some of the most vulnerable members of our community.”
The charities founder, Ian Sherman, BEM, was a town hall police officer known to the local street drinkers as ‘Ben’.
The 30th anniversary marks the opening of “Ben’s Place” as a safe space street drinkers could exist away from the fear of persecution.

In 2025, the centre supported 462 vulnerable people struggling with addiction and rough sleeping, a figure which has more than doubled in the last five years.
Sarah Batty added: “This milestone is also an opportunity to recognise the dedication of our staff, volunteers, partners, and supporters, whose unwavering commitment has enabled us to provide hope, dignity, and practical support to those who need it most.”
Ben’s Centre provides practical support like food, clothing and hygiene facilities for individuals. It is a vital ‘lifeline’ for substance users, with its day centre and outreach service running five days a week, it offers a sense of stability and an accepting community.
