Money raised in memory of popular Sheffield councillor who died after contracting coronavirus

Nearly £1,000 has been donated in memory of Pat Midgley after an appeal was set up by her daughter Joanna, with the cash to be shared between three charities close to the councillor’s heart – the S2 Foodbank where Coun Midgley was a regular helper; St Wilfrid’s Centre, which provides support for homeless people; and ASSIST Sheffield, which helps asylum seekers.

Coun Midgley was one of Sheffield's most long standing and well respected councillors.

The Labour councillor for 33 years was taken to hospital after falling ill and died on Sunday, March 29 after being diagnosed with coronavirus.

Coun Midgley was initially elected in 1987 to represent Nether Edge and served the ward for eight years before moving to the Manor ward.

She was a former Lord Mayor and also served as a magistrate.

In an online fundraising appeal on the Go Fund Me website, her daughter Joanna said: “Our wonderful mum, Pat Midgley, died on March 29. “Mum was a generous, caring and selfless person, who worked tirelessly for social justice.

“She was devoted to her family and large circle of friends and loved bringing people together.

“As a Labour councillor for 33 years she dedicated her time to helping and serving others and represented the ward she was born in, and lived in, all her life.

“Mum was so proud of this role and of her community.“We have set up this page to raise funds in her memory and will share the proceeds equally between three local charities which meant a lot to mum and who are working on the frontline to help disadvantaged people in challenging circumstances. These are the S2 Foodbank, where mum was a regular helper’ St Wilfrid’s Centre. which provides support for homeless people and ASSIST Sheffield. who help destitute asylum seekers. “Thank you for your support.”

Coun Midgley is survived by her husband Don, brother Tony, children Joanna, Neil and Jamie and grandchildren Harriet, Lucy, Jude, Theo and Madeline.
