Murder suspect arrested over Sheffield killing remains in custody in Germany

A man arrested in Germany on suspicion of a murder in Sheffield remains in custody abroad.

The 25-year-old Chinese national, living in Sheffield, was arrested in Frankfurt on Wednesday, March 25, over the murder of 26-year-old Xiangyu Li in Sheffield the day before.

South Yorkshire Police said the suspect was detained under a European Arrest Warrant and is being held while arrangements are made to bring him to Sheffield for questioning.

Emergency services were called to the junction of Union Street and Charles Street in Sheffield city centre at around 3.30am on Tuesday, March 24 after Mr Li was found unconscious.

Police officers and paramedics attempted resuscitation, but he could not be saved and was pronounced dead at the scene.

A post mortem examination established that he died from a head injury.Mr Li, who is originally from China and was living in Kent prior to his death, was visiting friends in Sheffield when he was attacked.
