Ajman Ali, Executive Director of Operational Services, said: "Since the sudden closure of the building, we have been doing all we can to find a suitable temporary alternative for the café to ensure refreshments are available to people in the park.

"After assessing all the options available, allowing the operator the opportunity to provide and run a temporary facility was deemed the fastest, most appropriate way to reignite trade and provide a provision in the park.”

The statement confirmed the original decision to close the building in July was reviewed as part of the process to this point, before the temporary facility option was settled on.

Mr Ali said: “We are committed to featuring a café in the park long term. No decision has been made regarding the future of the Rose Garden Café building and we will work in partnership with the community on this.”

The statement also clarified the operator has been “offered the opportunity” to run a temporary facility.

It appears as though this offer is yet to be accepted, with the statement also saying it will be offered to other operators if the current team do not agree.

Why is the Rose Garden Cafe closed?

The Cafe closed on July 28 due to safety reasons after a report on the building revealed issues with the roof, prompting concerned park users to ask what was in store for the building in future.

The concerns lead to the creation of a petition and JustGiving page aimed at raising the funds to repair the building.

On August 5, 200 campaigners from the ‘Save the Rose Garden Cafe’ (SRGC) group met in the building’s gardens to discuss with councillors to discuss what could be done to save the cafe.

The latest update from the council still leaves questions over the future of the building, with Mr Ali saying no decision had been made.
