The demonstration, which took place peacefully outside B&M on Chesterfield Road, was sparked by a former worker who is calling on bosses to pay off the unpaid wages.

He was joined by other former B&M workers as well as members of the public who supported them in their cause.

Passing cars could be heard honking in a show of support.

A statement by its organisers 'Sheffield Needs a Pay Rise' said the protest was held to support a former worker who is demanding wages owed to him whilst he worked at the store.

The ex-worker Cristian Vaida said he walked off the job after trying to resolve his pay dispute.

He has been protesting outside the Chesterfield Road chain every day this week and has since been joined by other former workers and the public.

He said: “I had been working for B&M for 12 months - all the way through the global pandemic.

"I was just doing a simple honest job and trusting in the system. I never thought I would need a union or the community to support me. But then things started to go wrong.

"I have family and children to look after, so I do my best to work hard and tried to help the business by working extra hours.

"I was working six or seven days a week every week, sometimes 12 hours a day.

"This has been so distressing and my mental health has really suffered. I just want the money I’m owed so I can support my family.”

Demaine Boocock, local community member and B&M customer said Christian is a fantastic worker always goes above and beyond to help.

"This just shows why all workers must join together in a union, to protect each other.”

When asked to respond on the protest and the allegations made, a B&M spokesperson said: “We are aware of the complaint raised by Cristian Vaida and take his allegations very seriously.

"Whereas we are unable to comment on the details of the case due to GDPR Regulations, we have investigated Mr Vaida’s case fully and we believe that we have reached a suitable resolution.”
