13. Sheffield becomes a city
Sheffield is today England's fifth biggest city but it was only awarded city status back in 1893. High Street, in Sheffield city centre, is pictured here in that year decorated for the royal wedding of the Duke of York, later George V. Photo: Picture Sheffield
Sheffield has produced more than its fair share of world-beating boxers, including 'Prince' Naseem Hamed, Junior Witter and Kell Brook. Johnny Nelson, who like Hamed and Brook, trained at Brendan Ingle's famous Wincobank gym, held the WBO cruiserweight title from 1999 to 2006, defending his crown against a record 13 opponents, and he remains the longest reigning cruiserweight world champion of all time.
