Tramlines issues statement as concerns raised for Hillsborough Park swans' welfare during Sheffield festival

Concerns raised for swan and cygnet

Organisers of the Tramlines festival say they are looking after swans in Hillsborough Park, after concerns were raised over the birds.

Social media posts, placed on a bird rescue site, raised concerns over a swan and five cygnets, amid fears they may not be able to access the pond in Hillsborough Park.

A picture posted on the Sheffield Stringfoot Pigeons & Bird Rescue social media page appeared to show the birds behind wire fences in Hillsborough Park, the venue for the three day music festival which runs until Sunday night.

The posting also stated: “I walked through Hillsborough park yesterday and noticed a swan with five cygnets at the other side of the park towards the Hawksley Avenue entrance. There’s usually six cygnets and two adult swans, also noticed geese scattered about all over the place, I walk through regular and they are not normally that far away from the pond. Obviously tramlines set up causing them distress, something should be put in place to protect them whilst this is going on.”

Tramlines have now responded the the claims.

Tramlines said in a statement: “We have measures in place to take care of the swans throughout our time in Hillsborough Park, including fencing off the pond as a safe haven for them and feeding them every day.

“Contrary to some of the comments on the highlighted photo, taken before the festival opened, the swans are not trapped in the public area and can return to the pond whenever they like.”
