'Busiest ever' Sheffield party street closed because of late night Halloween revellers

Sheer number of revellers forced closure for safety reasons

A major Sheffield party street had to be closed on Halloween evening due to the sheer number of revellers spilling out into the road.

West Street was closed to cars just before 11.30pm, because of safety concerns on the street, which is popular among late night drinkers. The closure was in place for more than four hours.

It came at the peak period of this weekend’s Halloween celebrations, and pictures show the huge numbers who were out on the streets.

Police said in a statement: “At 11.28pm on Saturday (31 October), officers made the decision to put a temporary road closure in place on West Street, in Sheffield.

“This was due to the amount of people in the area, and to ensure the safety of those enjoying the city's night time economy. The road was reopened at around 4am on Sunday (November 1).”

Saturday saw hundreds out on the streets of Sheffield in fancy dress, as residents partied for Halloween.

Tricia Watts, co-ordinator for Sheffield Street Pastors, who help city centre revelers, said her team had never seen as many people out on West Street. Friday had also been incredibly busy, she said.

“The team that was out on Saturday were incredibly busy,” she said. “They’d never seen so many people on West Street.

“They had to put several people into taxis, and called an ambulance for a lady who had been unconscious.

“They picked up 147 glass bottles and gave out eight pairs of flip flops.”
