The shop has been closed since, and remains shut, after the man was taken away into an ambulance, according to eye witnesses. Police have said he was not seriously injured.

Sainsbury’s has now issued a statement over the incident, and confirmed the shop will remain closed until they have finished assessing the situation.

The company said: "Our Sheffield High Street store closed earlier today after an incident which involved a customer.

“Our colleagues were on hand to help and immediately called the emergency services, whilst taking care of the customer.

“The store will remain closed while we assess the situation.”

The road was closed while emergency services were at the incident, with trams disrupted.
