Photos how blazing buses as firefighters remain at "volcano" scrapyard fire

Road closures still in place

New pictures show buses ablaze at the scene of a major fire which gripped a South Yorkshire scrapyard.

Firefighters still remain at the scene on Boulder Bridge Lane, in Carlton, Barnsley, and the road still remains closed while they work there.

They expect to remain there for the rest of the day.

At its height, 10 fire engines were deployed to the blaze, which broke out on Saturday evening, and has been described by an eyewitness as looking like a “volcano”.

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “Firefighters worked with skill and bravery to prevent the fire from spreading, including to potentially dangerous gas cylinders.”

“Well done to firefighters, officers and Control operators for their ongoing work at this extremely challenging incident.”

“Four fire engines remain on scene - and we expect to be there for at least the next 24 hours.”

They continue to ask people to avoid the area, and warning people who live nearby to keep their windows and doors shut.
