Devastated mum's heartbreaking message ahead of teenage son's funeral in Rotherham
The devastated mum of a teenage boy who drowned in Ulley reservoir posted a heartbreaking message on Facebook the day before his funeral.
Sam Haycock, aged 16, died after getting into difficulty in the water at Ulley reservoir on the day he officially left school.
Frantic friends raised the alarm when he disappeared under the water and a major search and rescue mission was mounted.
The youngster’s body was recovered a number of hours later, leaving family and friends devastated at their loss.
The day before they gathered to say their final goodbyes at Sam’s funeral yesterday, the teenager’s mum, Gaynor, posted her thoughts on Facebook to pay tribute to her beloved son.
She said: “Can’t find words to think that our baby is gone, we are heartbroken beyond words could say.
“We will do you proud Sam, a celebration of your life. We love you like you won’t believe.
“The angels needed you too early to leave us. Until we meet again soon next to stars, love mum, dad and all your family.”
People lined the streets yesterday to pay their respects to Sam as the funeral cortege left his East Dene home.
Dozens of bikers answered his family’s call to accompany the former Oakwood School pupil on his final journey.
Balloons tied to lampposts marked the route and flares were let off.
Although attendance at the funeral service at Rotherham Crematorium was limited, it was streamed online for those unable to attend.
In addition to floral tributes placed alongside Sam’s coffin, a Judo suit he wore when he represented Great Britain in international competition was also on display.
