Portions of chicken laced with the poison and inserted with nails and blades were recently discovered in Burngreave Cemetery, where some hedgehogs have been found dead.

Officers investigating the ‘suspicious activity’ believe ‘food appears to have been deliberately poisoned and buried, seemingly for animals to find’.

Wildlife and Rural Crime Coordinator, Amanda Brundell, said: “This activity is concerning in that several pieces of chicken have been laced with a powder and then had nails or blades inserted in them before being shallow buried.

“We have recovered some of the pieces, however sadly some hedgehogs have been found dead nearby.

“I urge all dog walkers to be vigilant if you’re in the area, and if you do see anything suspicious, please contact us.”
