A South Yorkshire Police officer who struck a Sheffield Wednesday fan over the head with a baton has been placed on restricted duties.

The officer was filmed on a mobile phone striking a 16-year-old Owls fan after Sheffield Wednesday played Barnsley FC at Oakwell on Saturday, February 8.

The incident happened on Midland Street as fans made their way from Barnsley’s ground to the transport interchange in the town.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct has launched an investigation into the incident and advised the officer that he is the subject of a criminal investigation.

He is also being investigated for possible gross misconduct.

South Yorkshire Police has confirmed the officer is still working for the force, but on restricted duties.

In a statement, the force said: “Pending the outcome of the IOPC’s criminal and misconduct investigations, and in line with force procedure, the officer has been placed on restricted duties.”
